Classification of Safety Toed Shoes

Safety toed shoes and boots are designed to keep you safe in a variety of different situations. Whether it is from falling cinder blocks or sharp nails in the floor or electric shock, there are a number of different dangers that you may come across in your workplace that you need protection from. But not all safety toed boots and work boots protect against all types of dangers. Each shoe is created to protect against only certain dangerous, and those shoes that are safety toed are classified according to what the shoe can protect you from.

Safety Toed Classifications

There are different symbols that tell whether or not the safety toe footwear protects against specific dangers. Knowing those symbols will help you understand the protected you are getting with your steel toed shoes.

Yellow Triangle
The yellow triangle represents the protection against puncture wounds. Known as "Grade 2," it can withstand up to 90 Joules of pressure.

Green Triangle
The green triangle can protect against greater puncture strength. It is known as "Grade 1" protection, and protects against 125 Joules.

Orange Omega Symbol
The orange omega symbol represents resistance against electrical shock.

Yellow Rectangle (with letters SD in green)
The yellow rectangle means that the shoe protects against static discharge. This is only necessary when static discharge is a danger threat.

Red Rectangle with a Black "C"
This is to be used at places with lower level electrical shock risk. It dampens the amount of shock the person would receive, but does not protect against higher levels of electrical shock.

Small Green Fir Tree in a White Rectangle
The fir tree represents protection against chainsaws and cutting tools, usually those that you may find in a logging company.

Safety toed shoes and boots, as well as all safety shoes and work boots are designed for protection. Look for all of the symbols when you are looking for a shoe that protects against a specific kind of danger.
